I am sure most of you are familiar with Einstein’s famous formula E = mc2. It basically states that mass can be converted directly into energy and vice versa. This was a crucial development within the science of physics, and was a staggering revelation in its day.
As I reflect upon the wealth of scientific tools and knowledge that we have today, I’m still in awe as to how far Einstein and his colleagues figuratively catapulted the science-community in a forward direction. Einstein seemed to pull principles out of thin air, most of which have since been proven valid, and are still quite relevant today.
As essential as Einstein’s most famous formula is to mass and energy, there's a fundamental concept within the Bible that explains the relationship between the physical and spiritual realms. This nugget of knowledge is found within the New Testament, and is repeated below.
First Corinthians 15, NIV: (46) The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.
As we will later discover, this concept works not only for mankind, but for the existence of God himself.
Curiously, many believers accept the notion that God has always existed. This notion is surely non-scientific, and mind-boggling unexplainable.
Further, it conjures up the imagination into thinking that if we take for granted that God has always existed, then from a scientific standpoint… there must have been an intelligent creator prior to our God-of-the-Bible that we are unawares.
I don't know of any statements within the Bible that declare God has always existed. Although it does state that God was the very first, and the only God ever to exist. Examples of such a statement are shown in the following verses.
Isaiah 43, NIV: (10) “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.
Isaiah 44, NIV: (6) This is what the Lord says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. (7) Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come— yes, let them foretell what will come. (8) Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”
Colossians 1, NIV: (15) The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (16) For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. (17) He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (18) And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. (19) For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, (20) and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
In this verse of Colossians 1:15, it states that the invisible God was the firstborn over all creation. Since God was here from the very beginning, and likewise prior to the universe as we perceive it - there was no intelligent entity before the Lord (God) himself. Just as it states below.
John 1, NIV: (1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Note that I interpret the “Word” in the preceding verse to include the characteristics of consciousness and intelligence.
We can all identify with our common physical-realm. It’s what we see, touch and feel. It can also be scientifically studied.
In contrast, we may be able to experience the spiritual realm, but it cannot be scientifically studied.
Regardless, I believe that the spiritual realm is comprised of extremely small particles. Yes, I said it. Particles!
These particles are exponentially times smaller than all of our known atomic structures like carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. At its core, the spiritual realm is sub-atomic.
As a basic construct, I’d like to introduce an analogy that you all can identify with.
Assume that we have a transport truck with a driver carrying a heavy load of steel. The windows of the truck are heavily tinted, so we cannot see the driver inside. In this example, the driver who holds the intelligence and controls the rig represents the spiritual side; the truck with its powerful engine and its heavy load, represents the physical side.
As a riddle, who holds the most power in this scenario. The driver or the truck?
Delving a little deeper, let’s revisit the verse which we discovered earlier which explains the relationship between the physical and spiritual realms.
First Corinthians 15, NIV: (46) The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.
I interpret this verse to mean that the spiritual can only be birthed out of the physical, since the physical-realm came first.
If our creator conforms to this logic, then there must have been something physical prior to our creator's existence.
So, which came first? Our spiritual Creator, or physical matter? It seems we’ve run headlong into a chicken and egg scenario.
There’s much to be unraveled within this concept, and most of it cannot be understood without delving deep into particle physics and this concept of consciousness.
For the time being, please understand that this chicken and egg scenario is wrapped up into the fact that God aligns himself with the number seven, and can’t be adequately explained without using the science of physics. In addition, this scenario of God coming into his own was such a rare occurrence, that it's only happened once.
From my opinion, the real question for most comes down to this. Do you think that it was more likely that the universe created itself, and then various forms of intelligent-life emerged on their own? Or did an intelligent spirit emerge first, and then create the whole universe? It's either one or the other.
